Charles Edward
Callaham
August 16, 1949 – January 27, 2024
Charles Edward Callaham originally of Brookneal, VA, age 74, passed away on January 27, 2024, in Norfolk, Va. He was the son of the late Charles Henry Callaham and the late Shirley Elizabeth Thornton Jones Callaham.
He was preceded in death by a younger brother, Costello "Peewee" Callaham.
Charles attended Falling River Elementary School where he was a member of the Library Club. He later attended Campbell County High School in Rustburg, VA where he represented the Wildcats with pride as a member of the Baseball and Football teams. He lettered multiple years in both sports during his high school years. In May 1969, with three games left in the season, the baseball team was undefeated with Charles taking the mound as the winning pitcher in two (2) of the games: away at Langston in Danville, VA (6 to 5) and a home game on April 25th (4 to 3). As talented as he was as pitcher, Charles' favorite position on the baseball team was catcher, where his true talent was evident. Charles served in the United States Army from September 11,1969 to July 29, 1971. He loved to laugh with his brothers as he told stories of his time serving in Germany.
Charles was baptized at an early age becoming a member of St. Luke Baptist Church. He loved to hunt, fish, play baseball and travel. His travels took him from Brookneal, VA to work in Connecticut during the summer, later to live in Washington DC and eventually back to VA to the east coast, finally settling in Norfolk. Here Charles was able to enjoy his major passions, baseball and fishing. He could often be found sitting on a pier fishing.
Charles leaves behind his children: Shevika, Shaquanda and Carl Callaham, Antonio Jones; and grandchildren, all of Norfolk. Cherishing his memory are his siblings: Carroll C. (Annette) of Lynchburg, VA, Sharon A. Layne (Michael Sr.) of Gladys, VA, Sherry D. Proctor (Edward Sr.) of Fort Washington, MD and Sherel C. Ferguson (Clifton Jr "Bill") of Garner, NC; a multitude of nieces and nephews; as well as great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Metropolitan Funeral Services, INC in Norfolk, VA are in charge of arrangements.
