Clyde Thomas
Mathews
February 7, 1936 – June 9, 2025
Clyde Thomas Mathews, 89, took his heavenly flight on June 9, 2025 at his residence, where he joined the God he loved and served, with many family and friends. He was the devoted husband of Faye Bailey Mathews for 59 years.
Clyde was born on February 7, 1936, at Stapleton in Amherst County. He was the son of the late Charlie Wesley Mathews and Effie Moore Mathews. He was a faithful member of Diamond Hill Presbyterian Church.
Clyde never met a stranger and was never lost for words. He was a friend to everyone.
Clyde served our country with pride in The United States Army. A part of his two-year term, he was stationed in Germany.
He worked in the construction business for 44 years and retired from Hancock Fuqua Construction Company in 1998. He took pride in his work- it had to be done right! After retirement he happily worked for free on many projects for friends and neighbors. In his later years, he enjoyed working on "fixing" small engines and anything that didn't work.
Along with his parents, Clyde was preceded in death by his sisters, Willie Ann Tetter, Helen Mathews, Dorothy Mathews, Mabel Pillow, Margaret Hostetter; his brothers, Harry, Gordon, Robert "Joe", Charlie "Dick", Edward "Buck", and Frank "Dewey."; brothers-in-law, Tom Tetter, Harold Pillow, Mack Hostetter and Paul Webster; sister-in-law, Lucille, Tiny, and Becky Mathews.
Left to cherish his wonderful memories are his wife, Faye, her family who he loved like his own, and his family! He is survived by his sister, Frances Webster; sister-in-law, Lillie Mathews and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was special to Vanessa and Derek who will live in their hearts forever.
Clyde's wish is that no one grieves for him after he is gone. He lived a good life, enjoyed every day, and gives God all the credit.
Memorial contributions or a charity of your choice in Clyde's memory may be made to Diamond Hill Presbyterian Church ,1090 Mollies Creek Road, Gladys VA, 24554.
