Obituary

Douglas Norwood Fitch Jr. (Dougie) died on Sunday January 18th, 2026 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the son of Douglas Norwood Fitch Sr. and Virginia Carwile Fitch. He was a resident of Concord, VA.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Tibbs Fitch; sister-in-law, Dana Scott Fitch; and dear friend, Mike Mason.

He is survived by his parents, Douglas Norwood Fitch, Sr. and Virginia Carwile Fitch; brothers, Steve Fitch and David Fitch (Mary); a dear niece, Carissa Sprinkle (Travis) and their children Charlotte and Jackson, who were the apple of his eye.

Dougie was a graduate of Rustburg High School and Phillips Business College, majoring in computer science. He worked several years in Houston, TX, but the call of country life and dear family brought him back to his home place in Concord. He loved country life and sharing his eggs from the chickens he raised. He loved his chickens, naming them and greeting them every morning with "Good morning my ladies". He enjoyed working in the garden and growing beautiful flowers. He loved the smell of fresh cut grass, hanging his laundry in the fresh air, and playing with his beloved dog, Chance. He liked going to the beach with family and friends and camping and fishing with dear friends, Steve and Samantha Franklin.

Dougie was a great cook, artist, and an avid reader, enjoying books by John Grisham and James Patterson. He was a life-long member of New Bethel Church in Gladys where you could find him working in the kitchen or decorating for Christmas. He was a kind and compassionate man and was a blessing to many in the community. Those he helped felt blessed to have received his care. He was a beloved brother, an angel to many who carried a big smile, and will be greatly missed.

The family would like to thank the kind acts and expressions of sympathy shown to them. A special thank you to the nurses at Lynchburg General Hospital Surgical Intensive Care Unit, who took wonderful care of Dougie, and their pastor Reverend Albert Read. A visitation and memorial service will be held Saturday, February 7th at 1pm at New Bethel Church located at 5854 Nowlins Mill Road in Gladys, VA led by Reverend Albert Read and Reverend Roger Powell. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Janet Fitch Fund of New Bethel Church, which serves to help those in need in the community.
