Janie Lee Clay, age 88 of Hurt, Virginia, passed away on January 11, 2026 in Roanoke, Virginia. She was born on June 21, 1937 in Halifax County to the late Charlie Bennett Barrett and Dolly Lee Thompson Barrett.

She was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church and a homemaker. She loved her Bluegrass music and watching westerns.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Hollis Barrett and Owen Junior Barrett; and sister, Lois Barrett Compton.

She is survived by one son, Charlie Lee Clay of Hurt, Virginia; one niece, Frances Padilla of Hurt; her bonus family, Tammy Leach of Gretna, Virginia, Shirley Anderson of Hurt, Virginia,; longtime caretaker, Candice, Chloe and Leland, Jamie and Christina, who loved her dearly.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
