Lawson Hunter Harris, age 91 of Long Island, Virginia, passed on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at his residence. He was born on May 9, 1933 in Lynchburg, the husband of the late Laura Bray Harris for sixty-one years. He was the son of the late William Bryant Harris and Mary Griffin Harris. He attended Edge Baptist Church in Long Island. He was a Korean War Veteran, where he served as military police. He worked at Limitorque as a machinist for forty-five plus years. He then worked for Campbell County Park and Recreation Services for fifteen years. He was an avid gardener, restored antique tractors, carpenter, an all-around jack-of-all-trades – if it was broke, he could fix it.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Bray Harris; one brother, George Bryant Harris; two sisters, Dorothy Harris Childress, Betty Jean Worsham; and son-in-law, Dewey Wayne Claybrook.
He was a devoted husband to his wife, a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He is survived by his four children, Danny L. Harris (Donna Kaye) of Hurt, Donna H. Claybrook of Concord, Donald H. Harris (Valerie) of Gladys and Lewis G. Harris (Lisa) of Long Island; eight grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 2, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Edge Baptist Church in Gladys by Dr. Jerry P. Jordan. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the church prior to the services.
There will be a private graveside service at the Poindexter cemetery. The family would like to offer their gratitude to Leslie, Janet and Cheryl for being such good caregivers and allowing our father's wish to stay in his home a reality.
