Obituary

Quietly and peacefully, our Lord transitioned his faithful daughter, Deaconess Mary Ann Hubbard Bolden, to eternal rest by His side on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at her daughter's home in Red House, Virginia.

Born on February 10, 1943 in Campbell County, VA, Deaconess Mary was the third child, and second daughter, of the late Frank Sr. and Lou Bettie Hubbard. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized at the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Red House, VA.

While Deaconess Mary's educational journey began in Campbell County, VA, she graduated from Central High School in Charlotte County, Virginia. The day after graduation, she moved to New York ready to embrace new opportunities. While in New York, Deaconess Mary met and married the love of her life, Henry A. Bolden, on March 1, 1969. Together, they nurtured a family filled with love and joy. Mary and Henry returned to Red House, VA in 1973 to continue raising their young family. Her early career as a homemaker set the foundation for a life dedicated to caring for those around her. In 1982, she began her work at Herncalls Dry Cleaners in Appomattox, VA where she devoted the next 18 years of her life bringing light and joy to the customers who patroned the business. Following that, she spent 15 years at Babcock Manor Assisted Living Facility, where her compassionate nature and dedication to service made a significant impact on the lives she touched.

In addition to her parents, Deaconess Mary was preceded in death by brothers, Frank, Samuel, Bobby, and Leroy Hubbard; sisters, Shirley Smith and Betty Hubbard; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Henry Louis Bolden and Louise Clark Bolden; brother-in-law, Ray Bolden; and sisters-in-law, Shirley Gates and Barbara Balaam. Though her family has welcomed her into eternal rest, her memory will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.

She is survived by her loving and loyal husband of fifty-five beautiful years, Henry A. Bolden, devoted daughter Pamela M. Miller (Glen), and dedicated son Christopher A. Bolden (JaVera). While she was always proud of her daughter and son, she held a special affection for her grandchildren: Deion Miller (Patience), Daisha Miller, Christina/River Bolden, and Allana Bolden. She was also very blessed to meet her great-grandson, Devin J. Miller. Each of them carries a piece of her spirit, reflecting her compassion and warmth in their own lives. Deaconess Mary's extended family carrying on her love for life are brothers-in-law, Samuel Bolden (Andrea), Sonnie Bolden (Kathy), and Harold Bolden (Zoe); sisters-in-law, Annette Bolden Walker, Carolyn Bolden Smith, Rita Bolden Wiley, Ella Bolden and Cammie Hubbard; nephews, Samuel Hubbard (Georgia), Anthony Hubbard, Leroy Hubbard, Jr. and Bobby Jones (Laura); nieces, Audrey Randall, Vinnie Paige (Don) and Nancy Davis (Dwayne); and a host of numerous cousins, and other relatives.

Deaconess Mary was an active member of her community and church. She served faithfully at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Red House, VA, where she was a Deaconess, Chairperson of the Kitchen Committee, working with the Food Bank, and a cherished member of the Senior Choir. Additional earlier contributions to the church include serving on the Pastor's Aide Committee and working with the Youth Choir, nurturing the next generation in their faith. She was fondly known for her exceptional culinary skills, especially her mouthwatering fried chicken, which brought family and friends together around the dinner table. Moreover, Deaconess Mary was known for her compassionate spirit, always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear. Her warmth and kindness created a nurturing environment for her family and friends, who will forever remember her for the love she so generously gave.

In this time of loss, we must extend our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the dedicated nurse, Sharon Harvey of Caremed, for the compassionate care she provided to Deaconess Mary in her final days.

As we say goodbye to this incredible woman, we remember the love she shared, the lessons she taught, and the faith she embodied. May her soul rest in eternal peace, and may her memory be a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
